Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical – Review by Antonia Jones

Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical currently playing at the Lyric theatre, in the West End, follows the Reggae legend’s life in true likeness. Little was known about Bob Marley’s upbringing and the emotional turmoil he’d have experienced when separated as a youngster from his mother who sent him away to live with relatives for a better life. It was to no surprise that through Bob Marley’s sending away that this would lay the foundation for his successful music career in years to come.

Bob Marley was played by Declan Spaine, last Thursday (24 February) who along with the amazing cast and musicians brought to life the magical moments of one of the most influential entertainment icons as it followed his purposeful journey to spread love, hope, peace and unity across the world through his lyrics and music.

At times during the musical you couldn’t stop and think that time had been rolled back and you was at a real Bob Marley concert with the sounds of Get Up, Stand Up!, Redemption Song, Jamming and One Love playing. These were just a few of the iconic hits in the show which paid homage to Bob Marley and the Wailers. The vibrant production and choreography definitely captured the ambiance of that era throughout and to no surprise which is why the evening performance received a long standing ovation.

Thanks to the creatives, musicians, and the full cast including Gabrielle Brooks who played Rita Marley for her outstanding vocals, and lest we forget the multi-award winning team Lee Hall (writer) and Clint Dyer (director) of the musical for reviving Bob Marley’s life story and bringing it back to life!

Antonia Jones also caught up with Daniel Bailey who plays Lee “Scratch” and is currently starring in the West End show in London Get Up! Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical just before he went on stage. Listen to the podcast.
