THIS WEEK
1981 – the first ever London marathon was held, 6,700 participants turned out in drizzle to complete the gruelling run, 26 miles from Greenwich Park, in south east London, to Buckingham Palace,.
It is now an annual event with the number of participants now averaging more than 30,000.
