The House of Lords voted in favour of allowing cameras to broadcast live discussions from its chamber. MPs continued to block moves to televise the House of Commons’ debates fearing politicians might play up to the cameras and bring the House into disrepute. The Commons had been debating the wisdom of letting the cameras in for 20 years before finally taking the plunge in November 1989.

Michael Jackson’s 14-minute music video for Thriller was premiered on MTV. Voted as the most influential pop music video of all time,Thriller proved to have a profound effect on popular culture, and was named a watershed moment for the music industry for its unprecedented merging of film-making and music.
