About

Phoenix FM is a community radio station broadcasting on 98.0 FM to Brentwood and Billericay, Essex, United Kingdom and also on line to the world!

Quick history:

The station was formed in August 1996 as “The Phoenix” with the aim of bringing a new community-based local radio service to Brentwood, Billericay and surrounding areas.

In April 1999 the station changed its name from “The Phoenix” to “Phoenix FM”. We also moved our headquarters from Brentwood Borough Council’s Tourist Information Offices in Ongar Road to a new home in the Hermitage Arts Centre in Shenfield Road.

In June 2001 we became the first community station, and one of the first stations in the UK, to stream programmes on the internet.

We moved to our third temporary home in December 2001 – Hutton Poplars Lodge in Shenfield.

We spent 10 years of lobbying The Radio Authority and its successor, Ofcom, and in that time we undertook 12 short term broadcasts:

29 December 1996 to 25 January 1997, 107.0 FM
1 March 1999 to 28 March 1999, 107.0 FM
21 November 1999 to 18 December 1999, 107.0 FM
3 June 2000 to 30 June 2000, 87.7 FM
1 February 2001 to 28 February 2001, 87.7 FM
1 February 2002 to 28 February 2002, 87.9 FM
3 November 2002 to 30 November 2002, 87.9 FM
1 June 2003 to 28 June 2003, 87.7 FM
27 November 2003 to 24 December 2003, 87.7 FM [*]
1 May 2004 to 28 May 2004, 87.7 FM
27 November 2004 to 24 December 2004, 87.7 FM [*]
29 January 2006 to 25 February 2006, 87.7 FM

[*] as Eastgate FM, broadcasting from the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon.

In February 2006 we received news from Ofcom that we were to be awarded a new permanent radio licence. We launched full time on 23 March 2007 at our new studios in the Baytree Centre, Brentwood.

In February 2012 we moved from the Baytree Centre to our fifth home, at the Brentwood Centre.
