Following the horrific discovery at the Save a Paw animal rescue in Crays Hill Billericay back in May there is now a Government petition to Introduce Licensing and Regulation for Dog and Cat Rescues to Protect Welfare.
Many UK animal rescues operate without clear legal oversight, creating opportunities for unethical practices. Some rescues have been linked to supporting irresponsible breeding, neglecting animals, or misusing public donations.
Without enforceable standards, there is a risk that animals suffer in poor conditions, and public trust is undermined. The petition calls on the Government to introduce mandatory licensing and regular inspections to ensure rescues operate transparently and uphold high welfare standards. Regulation is essential to prevent cruelty, improve accountability, and ensure all rescued animals receive proper care.
By introducing clear legal requirements, the Government can safeguard animal welfare, protect public confidence in rescues, and prevent organizations from operating irresponsibly.
The petition currently stands at almost 55,000 signatures.
At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament
If you care about animal welfare, please sign the petition here.

Martin’s Choice – Hi Bob my song request today is by the band Steely Dan.
I’ve mentioned them enough times over the past weeks so I thought it’s time to request one of their songs.
An American band formed in New York, in 1971 by Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen)(keyboards, lead vocals). Originally having a traditional permanent band lineup, Becker and Fagen decided going forward just to use session musicians to record and tour as a band in 1974.
Steely Dan’s genre is most accurately described as jazz rock, with strong elements of soft rock, pop, and jazz fusion.
They have sold in excess of 40 million albums worldwide and have sold numerous top ten singles and have won many awards to add to their legacy.
This band have been a musical gateway throughout my life, the list of musicians and singers which have worked with the duo is far too great to be able to mention them all, but it’s safe to say they have been a major inspiration to many singers and musicians.
Unfortunately we lost Walter Becker in 2017 but Donald Fagen continues to perform and tour with the band. I’ve been lucky enough to see them a couple of times in concert and I can only say these have been the most memorable concerts I’ve ever had the privilege to see.
The song I have chosen is from their 1977 album “Aja” called “Peg”
It’s a great track which was used and sampled by De La Soul in 1989 with their song “Eye Know” and had a big top 10 hit with it.
As I mentioned before this track features both founders Fagen and Becker along with other session musicians. The guitar solo was played by a session musician called Jay Graydon, it was his solo that was chosen after many other guitarists had put down their versions in the studio but it was Jay Graydon’s solo that made the Final Cut, it is a great solo! Also if you listen carefully you can hear Michael McDonald on backing vocals, he of Doobie Brothers fame ! Hope you enjoy.
