Growing men’s shed venture in Billericay set for open day

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

Phoenix FM has a range of programmes which feature community information on an ongoing basis, and we have a particular emphasis on mental health. We have many different experts come in throughout the year on a regular basis to talk about one of the UK’s major health issues.

Each month, Michelle Ward is joined on air by Tracey Johnson of Vita Health Group and NHS Talking Therapies to talk about help that is available in the local area for Mental Health.

This week, they were joined by Kim Barford of Billericay Men’s Shed. The “shed” phenomenon has been growing over the last couple of years. A “shed” in his context is a community-based space where men can engage in practical activities and hobbies, while also fostering social connections and improving mental well-being.

These spaces are designed to combat isolation, reduce depression, and provide a supportive environment for men to share skills and experiences.

Kim came in to talk about the Billericay Men’s Shed, which is a new venture, but growing. She even talked about a song the members have produced, called Happy Shed.

The group has an Open Day on Saturday 5th July from 11am to 3pm. They are based at Lake Meadows, next to Billericay Bowls Club.

You can find out more about Billericay Men’s Shed at https://www.facebook.com/BillericayMensshed

There is also a Men’s Sheds group covering the whole of the UK – you can find out more at https://menssheds.org.uk/
