The Billericay Operatic Society at The Ramsden Bellhouse Flower Festival

As part of The Ramsden Bellhouse Flower Festival this year, members of the Billericay Operatic Society will be performing at St Mary’s Church on 12th July.

Also on todays show –

The George Harrison Project came in for a fun chat and we heard some of their live recordings – see separate post here.

A new track from Paul Jolley. It’s called “Catwalk” and is all about a fashion model and how she feels about having to parade in front of an audience. She’s not keen, but it’s a job…

Birthdays

1943 – Carly Simon, American singer-songwriter

1963 – George Michael, English singer-songwriter and producer (died 2016)

Martin’s Choice – My song request for this week is by Scottish Pop and rock band Deacon Blue who formed in Glasgow in 1985.

There have been other members of the band over the years but the current members are Ricky Ross and Lorraine Macintosh, drummer Dougie Vipond Guitarist Gregor Philip, Bassist Lewis Gordon, and keyboardist James Prime.

Regrettably James Prime passed away this month prompting me to request this song as a tribute to him. In 2013, their estimated album sales stood at six million, and by 2020 were estimated to have risen to in excess of seven million, with twelve UK top 40 singles, along with two number one albums in both the United Kingdom and their native Scotland.

Ross a former school teacher originally from Dundee was the group’s frontman, penning the majority of Deacon Blue’s songs. He married vocalist Lorraine McIntosh in 1990 and they are still together to this day.

The song I have chosen is ”Fergus Sings The Blues” it wasn’t one of their biggest hits reaching number 14 in the uk charts in 1989 but I think it’s a great song. Other songs of theirs include “real gone kid” “wages day” “and When the World Know your Name” to mention but a few! I was lucky enough to meet Ricky Ross in Billericay a few years ago, he was on tour around the uk and a friend of mine invited him to come and perform solo in Billericay!

He was amazing, a great musician and he has a great distinctive voice. Incidentally the bands name comes from a Steeley Dan song released in 1977 called Deacon Blues ! Hope you enjoy it.
