A popular local band is gearing up to celebrate their 50th Anniversary in the music business.
The Mays, who started out in 1975 under their original band name Four-May-Shun, are hosting a dance in memory of their brother Michael May who was the drummer in the family band.
The remaining May brothers will be reuniting for this special event to be held on Saturday 31 May 2025 at the former Carnival Hall, now known as the Village Hall, Burnham-on-Crouch, as part of the band’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
The band of the four May brothers started out performing their first gig on 17 December 1975 at Bradwell Power Station Club. This was for a birthday party for a good friend of Michael’s by the name of Keith Scurrrell.
As well as celebrating 50 years of The Mays in music, this event will also double up as a fundraiser for the NHS in Michael’s memory, as he would have celebrated his 70th birthday on 31 May.
Julian May added “We are also delighted to announce that Ian Cundy and Rick Fitzpatrick from ‘T-Bone Steak’ will be joining the line up with The Mays for the evening. This is a real thrill for the remaining brothers as ‘T-Bone Steak’, another local band who celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2024, were an inspiration in The Mays’ formative years when starting out as ‘Four-May-Shun’.”
The event will also coincide with the release of a new album titled “From The Archives” that will feature early recordings by T-Bone Steak and The Mays. It captures the sound that the May brothers heard as teenagers from The Kings Head, Bradwell-on-Sea way back in the early 1970’s.
It was there where ‘T-Bone Steak’ had a weekly Thursday night slot in between Disco hosted by Peter Metal. The album has original songs written by Andy Manley of the original T-Bone Steak along with songs written by Peter and Julian May.
