VE Day and The Rest.

An eclectic show today, both in terms of the music played and the stories covered.

It was back to the 1940’s for Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by The Andrews Sisters and White Cliffs of Dover by Vera Lynn both to commemorate tomorrow’s 80th anniversary of VE day.

Also on today’s show –

Veterans and serving UK armed forces personnel have been offered free bus travel to Victory in Europe (VE) Day events across Essex.

US President Donald Trump has attracted criticism from some Catholics after posting an AI-generated image of himself as the Pope

A memorial to Motörhead lead singer and bassist Lemmy.

Birthdays and anniversaries –

1945 – World War II: Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel signs unconditional surrender terms at Reims, France, ending Germany’s participation in the war. The document takes effect the next day.

2000 – Vladimir Putin is inaugurated as president of Russia.

1946 – Thelma Houston, American R&B/disco singer and actress

1969 – Eagle-Eye Cherry, Swedish singer-songwriter

Martin’s Choice   I’m going to request a song by Amy Winehouse. She was born the 14th September 1983 and was an English singer songwriter who sold over 30 million records worldwide. She had a mix of music Genres which included soul, R&B reggae and jazz.

She attended the now famous Brit School of arts in Croydon south London who have managed to produce some of this countries most amazing artists including Adel and Katie Melua to name but a few.

Amy released her first Album “Frank “ in 2003, influenced by Jazz and apart from two covers the songs were written by Amy.

Frank was a commercial success in the uk and beyond and was nominated for the UKs Mercury prize and Ivan Novello award for one of the songs on the album, not bad for a first release! Her follow up album Back to Black in 2006 went on to become a huge international success and one of the best selling albums of all time and won her five Grammy awards which was also a world record for the most won for any female singer!

Despite her amazing success Amy struggled with substance abuse, mental illness and addictions, unfortunately she died from alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of just 27 prompting the media references to the now infamous 27 club !

The film Back to Black is a great compelling and inspirational film portraying her life and is definitely a must see.

The song I have chosen is love is a losing game, this song is short like her life and sums up her own turbulent love life. For me this is a definitive example of her work, life and career and she leaves a legacy which will continue for years to come.

Hope you enjoy.
