Lisa Masanovic explained that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. She gave the image of the brain being like a collection of numerous fairy lights. The effects of the disease are that some of the lights will sometimes light, but sometimes not. This means that the person may remember something one day, then not the next, then remember it again. The image she gave for permanent memory loss was like a bookcase that is filled from the bottom up with books of memories accumulated through life experience. Imagine that the bookcase is flimsy and starts to rock. The top ones, the most recent, fall out first. Permanent memory loss begins with the most recent memories, whilst memories from year ago can still be accessed. There is also an emotional bookcase. These don’t fall out so rapidly. People always continue to remember how they felt. Lisa emphasised that people can live well with dementia. It is a lottery as to who gets dementia, but a healthy life-style and cognitive stimulation can help greatly reduce the possibilities. She also stated that dementia is not an inevitable outcome of aging.
