Today’s playlist featured many tracks chosen by studio guests from the last few months. All guests are asked to choose three tracks. These can be music that reflects the themes we intend having a conversation about. Or they can be tracks that hold a special significance to them. Van Morrison – Down to joy – from the album – Remember now – scheduled for release on 13th of June 2025. His 48th studio album.

The Grease Mega-mix – 1990 released to mark the release o9f the video of the 1978 film. UK no 2, No 1 in Australia and Spain.

Teddy Swims – lose control – Mike Baker, who talked about The Chelmsford Diocese Course in Christian studies, feels Teddy “has a voice like butter”.

Shirley Bassey – I am what I am – Alison Winfield is a member of The Mulberry writers. They meet every Thursday morning at Mulberry House, High Ongar. A number of them have self-published books. She likes this song because she feels it speaks to her and about her – “I am who I am”.

Alison Winfield – How can I forget? – Alison wrote and recorded this track.

Sam Cooke – A change is gonna come – Nick Pucenot is a racial justice advocate in Southend. For him, this is a beautiful optimistic song of hope, written in an era of the struggle for civil rights in the USA.

Deacon Blue – Twist and shout – Sam Brazier-Gibbs Vicar of Blackmore and Stondon Massey chose this track. When she was a child, Deacon Blue were her older brother’s favourite band. She hated them. Situations meant a few years later she reluctantly went to a concert with him. She has loved the band ever since.

Dolly Parton – Jolene No 63 in 2021 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest songs of all time. Lynn Dejoot from CHESS homeless is a big country music fan. She came to update on the Turning Point project, providing 24 single units of accommodation.

Everly Brothers – May you always drive a Cadillac – Stephen Brabner saw the Everly Brothers on their last ever tour at  the Brentwood Centre in 1997. He enthused about St. Mary the Virgin church in Great Warley with a unique Art Nouveau arts and crafts interior.

Birthdays competition

McFly – All about you – 2005 Comic relief single. UK no 1, 6th best selling single of the year with 600,000 sales. One of the lead vocalists and guitarists in the band, Dany Jones, celebrated his 39th birthday this week.

Monkees – I’m a believer – 1966 No 1 in UK, USA & 11 more countries. Global sales of over 10 million. Micky Dolenz, drummer and one of the main vocalists with the band had his 80th birthday on Saturday.

Isley Brothers – Harvest for the world – 1976 UK no 10. Title track of the album that was USA no 9, selling over a million 33 rpm records. Ernie Isley, guitarist and drummer, is 73 years old.

Thanks to Chris, Bob and Sian in Harlow, Chris in Guildford and Patrick in Ingatestone for taking part today. The winner with 4 points was Patrick.

Keith & Kristyn Getty – He will hold me fast – Pauline Randall is chaplain at Billericay & Little Burstead team ministry chose this track because she knows God has held her and helped her in her 45 year Christian journey.

Dionne Warwick – I say a little prayer – Ian Moore talked about a recent trip to DR Congo. He chose this track for all the listeners and those reading the show blog.

Van Morrison – Bright side of the road – Dawn Butcher has been the Vicar at Christ Church Warley and St. Mary Great Warley since April 2024. She described herself, “as an ordinary girl from Dagenham”. Dawn likes this track as listening to it makes you feel good.

Quincey Jones – Soul Bossa Nova.

Whitney Houston – I wanna dance with some body – Sophie Rickett had visited a school in Brazil run by the charity Univida.  The pupils all came from the favelas. All the children and staff danced to this track at the end of a big event.
