Built in 1902, St. Mary the Virgin Great Warley is noted for the unique Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts interior, designed by sculptor and interior designer Sir William Reynolds-Stephens. The use of metals, marbles and mother of pearl, together with walnut furniture have led to locals referring to it as the “Pearl church”. The liquid aluminium used on the wall reflects the light, as does the mother of pearl which is on many parts of the decoration and religious symbols. Other examples of his work can be seen in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Lambeth Palace and Southwell minster. It is one of three churches designed in this style by architect Charles Harrison-Townsend. He also designed Bishopsgate Institute and the Horniman museum. Money for the land and the building of the church came from the Heseltine family, who clearly took an interest in the design.. Stephen Brabner mentioned the butterfly design by the door symbolising resurrection. Stephen loves showing the church to the many visitors. The church is open for visitors 2 – 4 pm on Thursdays from March – October inclusive. Also Bank Holiday Monday afternoons 12 noon – 4pm. The church webpage gives details about visiting.
Stephen also emphasised that it is also a living church with weekly services, every Sunday at 11.30. Attending a service enables experiencing the church as it was intended to be used.
