Help for men suffering in silence with mental health

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

In the UK, 1 in 4 adults experience a mental health issue each year, and the number of people seeking help is increasing.

Like our wonderful local newspapers, community radio does its best to inform its audience of how people can spot the signs and get help. However, a “one size fits all” approach rarely helps.

For the last 12 months we’ve been working with the Essex Community Tree to highlight many of the people and organisations who can offer mental health services to our community.

Last week it was the term of counsellor and psychotherapist Philip Wharam, who came in to talk about men’s mental health and his #mendonttalk campaign.

Due to societal expectations of masculinity, men are less likely to talk to others about their feelings, so they tend to suffer in silence. Philip explained what help is available and how it can be found.

We have more talks next week too, with Kamal Magecha from Guided Learning talking about children’s mental health, and Sidra Naeem and Tracey Johnson from Vita Health Group speaking about therapies available.

As well as our website of phoenixfm.com, all of our recent mental health interviews can be found as a podcast on Spotify. Search for Mental Health Matters and you’ll be able to find many more of our recent interviews there.
