The Hotel of Doom

So we start this week with a question for you.

How would you fancy being the first guest at a hotel boasting 7665 guest rooms – with 8 revolving floors including 5 revolving restaurants plus a viewing platform at the very top.

Sounds pretty good so far, doesn’t it?

It stands at a height of 1080 feet with over 105 storeys.

But you guessed it there is a catch.

Well for starter’s the building hasn’t yet been fully completed.

Construction started in 1987 and it had been expected to open to paying guests in June 1989, but clearly things didn’t go quite to plan.

Indeed construction came to a standstill in 1992 – 3 years after it was supposed to open – until 16 years later in 2008, when it was announced that the new opening date would be in 2012.

But construction to ground to a halt once again in 2011, causing the opening date to be postponed again, this time to 2013.

As things stand right now the interior remains basically a shell which has never been completed, and the outside of the structure having been battered by the elements, may also have been severely weakened.

In place of the original plans for modern lifts shooting up the outside of the building, currently there is only one lift – a service elevator – controlled by a man pushing a lever.

Indeed it has been reported that the originally planned lift shafts are actually crooked.

Apart from a two hour nightly LED light show, on the outside of the construction, which started in 2018, there have seemingly been no more concrete developments.

Not looking such a desirable place to stay now is it?

So just where and just what is, this incredible structure?

It is in fact the £1.6 billion RYUGYONG HOTEL, also known as the HOTEL of DOOM, which dominates the skyline of North Korea’s capital, PYONGYANG.

Even if it is eventually completed, it seems unlikely that too many people would ever be allowed access to the top floors since they provide views into the secretive areas of the capital, occupied by the country’s elite.

Incredibly, however the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un is reportedly planning to offer rights to foreign companies to open a casino in the building, even though gaming is illegal for the country’s residents.

A good bet? Well I wouldn’t put my money on it!

All this whilst Kim has recently ordered all citizens of the country to collect a whopping 220lb of their own poo due to shortages of available fertiliser necessary for food production!

Returning closer to home in the second hour, we reported on the “deathbed” confession of a 90-year old man.

Believing that he was about to shake off this mortal coil it seems he felt he owed it to his family to come clean with a last minute confession.

So whilst his wife and children were gathered round his bedside, to say their “final goodbyes” he admitted that during the times he’d been away on business he’d obtained a second family.

Not surprisingly this news went down like a cup of cold sick.

His wife and children promptly cast him off, which was rather unfortunate since he made a remarkable recovery and went on to live for another two years.

Oops!

Well I have no confessions to make and hope to have the pleasure of your company once again tomorrow,
Scott
