How your sense of self-worth can be boosted as a volunteer

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

If you’re stuck for New Year resolutions you could always take a leave out of Bob and Chris Waters’ book and look at volunteering for a local worthwhile cause.

Chris and Bob – regular visitors to Patrick Sherring’s Friday lunchtime show One 2 Three – both fundraise for Cancer Research and are both on the committee for their local branch.

They became involved following Bob’s cancer diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1990, and have helped their local group in Harlow has raised well over £100,000.

Chris is also a member of Harlow brass band, another voluntary group where she has seen young people grow in confidence and be empowered by others.

They came in to tell Patrick about the work they do, and how volunteering can give a sense of self-worth and giving back to the community.

You can hear their interview again at phoenixfm.com – Patrick is on air every Friday at 1pm on 98.0FM and online.
