The Tuesday Night Indiecator – a show from 1999!

The Tuesday Night Indiecator - 23 Nov 1999

It was twenty five years ago today …! Back in 1999 Phoenix FM wasn’t on the internet and it didn’t have a full time licence, but we used to broadcast on FM for 28 days once or twice a year under a Restricted Service Licence. Any station not on air full time can get one of these licences every six months. We broadcast on 12 of them before we went full time in 2007.

One such broadcast was in November 1999 and yes, I was there and on air once a week. I called my show the Tuesday Night Indiecator, because it was on Tuesday nights and it played indie music (or what we called indie music back in 1999, in any case).

This was just before the station got involved with “playout” software – computer programs for DJs which play mp3s. Back then we were still on CDs. For my radio show I would burn all the tracks I wanted to 2 CDs, and then press play on each player in turn. Much easier than finding all the tracks in a big box of CDs, which is what we had to do before CD burners.

Here’s my first show for that broadcast, which went out on air on 23 November 1999. You can hear the show again – on this particular show I was working through the decade, so the songs are all from 1991 and 1992. And there’s some real bangers there.

This wasn’t the first show I did for Phoenix FM but it’s probably the earliest one I can get my hands on, until I work out how to rip the big box of cassettes I have in my garage.

You can hear the show again. Sorry for the dodgy levels in the second half!
