Being a Tuesday, I was once again joined by local historian extraordinaire, Margaret Mills, who related the history of THE PURLEIGH COLONY, or brotherhood.
But before all that, in the first hour we heard about a group of women from Somerset who are up in arms over the loss of their underwear!
Well it’s not quite how it sounds as the women had decorated the roundabout in Chard, Somerset, with their best briefs, to raise awareness of breast and testicular cancer..
Cancer survivor Jill White said: “After many brave Chard residents removed their underwear in the name of charity, it’s all been pinched from the roundabout.
Chard Town Council have denied having anything to do with the disappearance of the display of lingerie so Jill is now appealing to those responsible to replace the items or get in touch with her.
In the meantime Jill says a new display will be established at a roundabout on the A30 near Tesco.
Well at lest the knicker snatcher will no know where to go next to top up their haul!
Anyway leaving the underwear covering roundabouts in the west country, we returned to Essex and notably Purleigh, where apparently inspired by the Russian writer, Tolstoy, the Purleigh colony or brotherhood, was established around 1896.
Perhaps because, Tolstoy’s fan base was somewhat limited, the colony disappeared after a comparatively short time, but if you missed what Margaret told me on this subject, you can catch it again here: –
Whatever I very much hope you will be able to join me again next week,
Scott
