Curveballs king celebrates 900th edition of his show

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

Our Wednesday night music presenter Nick Field celebrated the 900th edition of his weekly Curveballs show last week – quite a phenomenal achievement for a weekly show.

Nick is our second-longest team member, although he joined us 10 years after I started the station! I still remember him coming for an interview with us at Hutton Poplars Lodge, our home in the mid-2000s. We’d just been awarded a full-time came along and joined us immediately after we’d been told by the Radio Authority that we’d been awarded a licence.

After recording a podcast with us – we were broadcasting online before we went to FM – we put Nick on the schedule on Thursday nights when we launched full time on FM in March 2007. Other than a shift to Wednesdays, I think Nick has been on air every week since!

Curveballs is a real mix of genres – indie, dance, R&B, heavy metal, jazz, psychedelia – and has featured over 250 live sessions on air too.

Last week’s show celebrated the acts Nick has featured over the years who are continuing to make great music, and also looked at how the show has expanded to include many different kinds of performers.

Poet Simon Drake joined Nick in the studio for his second appearance. Simon showcased his thought-provoking poetry that’s never afraid to shy away from difficult topics.

When he’s not on air, you can see Nick in many film and TV productions and you honestly don’t know where he’s going to end up next I remember him popping up in a music video for chart-topping rock band Idles recently.

Nick’s shows can be found on phoenixfm.com to listen again – and you can hear him live every Wednesday at 8pm.
