For this week’s foray into the past, Margaret Mills told us all about “CHELMSFORD BRENDA”, who it turns out was not a person but a dog – a St Bernard to be precise.
It seems that Chelmsford Brenda was owned by a Mr and Mrs Nathan Smith.
Mr Smith was a dentist based on London Road in Chelmsford and with the agreement of the Red Cross, Chelmsford Brenda was put to work collecting money for the benefit of troops who had been wounded during the first world war.
Over the course of around 3 years she collected over £300.
If you missed what Margaret told me you can listen again here: –
Look forward to having your company again next week,
Scott
