Women’s football team coach and captain tell of first season fortunes

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

Our Drive host Jo Bailey has been keeping a close eye on the fortunes of Brentwood Town Women FC, who are playing their first season.

They’re currently playing in the Essex County Womens Football League, which is tier 7 of the FA Womens National Pyramid.

The club have very ambitious owners and managers though and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more than one or two promotions in the next few years.

They’ve got off to a good start too, drawing their first match 1-1 against Colchester United and then beating Brightlingsea Regent 3-1 to sit second in the league after two games.

Jo chatted to coach Nick Stagg and captain Rachel Armstrong about how things are shaping up for the season and, of course, why you should go along to support Brentwood Town Women FC!

Their next home game at the Brentwood Centre Arena is on October 6 against She Can Play Panthers – a team representing a local girls’ football academy that we featured on air five years ago. Kick off is at 2pm – get down there if you can.

You can hear our interview again at phoenixfm.com – and don’t forget that John Chubb covers an enormous amount of grass-roots sport on his Saturday sport show and the Non-League Hour every Thursday at 7pm.
