Car lighting system: what can be the danger of a headlight malfunction on British roads.

Travelling by car at night is a scary one for first-time drivers. However, even those who have been driving for more than a year often avoid travelling in the dark. Especially when you have to make a trip during rain, fog or snowfall. It is not strange, as the number of accidents in such conditions increases sharply. The main reason for this is the deterioration of visibility on the road. That is why it is so important to take care of the serviceability of lighting equipment.

Types of lighting, a car and why they are important.

Statistics show that many drivers in the UK refuse to drive at night because they believe that excessively bright headlights lead to accidents (64 per cent of respondents surveyed). In addition, they are also concerned about the glare from the headlights of neighbouring cars. And they are understandable, as poor quality or poorly functioning lighting equipment can indeed lead to tragic consequences. Your headlights need to be inspected regularly as it is their proper operation that determines both your safety and the safety of other road users.

The vehicle lighting system includes: headlights, tail lights, parking lights, main and auxiliary brake lights, number plate lights, turn signals, lamps and interior lights. The lighting system also includes switches and relays, which are responsible for the timely switching on of the necessary devices.

Thus, the lighting system is necessary not only to illuminate the road ahead of the car, but also to illuminate other objects that you meet on the way. In addition, parking lights help to understand the size of vehicles and what manoeuvre they are about to perform.

Lighting Equipment Failures.

So, let’s discuss the failures that can happen to lighting equipment and what they lead to:

  • Common power circuit breakdown. With such a breakdown, any light in the car will stop working. Accordingly, such a breakdown should be eliminated immediately, as it is impossible to move even in the daytime.
  • Broken contact in the lamp socket or in the connecting blocks, as well as a faulty switch or switch. Due to such a breakdown, several lamps in the headlights can abruptly stop working, which can lead to insufficient visibility while driving.
  • Often, vibration and weak fasteners cause the bulbs to burn out quickly or to ‘come loose’. Agree, if you have while driving on the highway ‘fall off’ part of the lighting equipment – it will be not only inconvenient, but frankly unsafe.
  • Violation of the adjustment, damage to the reflector, contamination is dispersed – all these are the reasons for the dimness of the light of the headlights. As you realise, in addition to a fine, such a breakdown can lead to an accident.

I know from experience that light problems when travelling at night are really quite serious. A few years ago, I drove into the rear of a car in front of me because its lights did not work to warn that the car was slowing down. Thankfully, it all happened at minimal speed and no one (other than the cars) was hurt. However, this once again proves the fact that lighting equipment should be checked regularly, especially before night journeys. In addition, it is necessary to carry out such checks in certified services and do not save money on them, as it is a bad idea to meddle with auto electrics on your own. This can lead to a complete failure of the electrical system.
