Be thankful for the NHS

I know it’s not always easy to get a doctor’s appointment these days but if you ever needed reminding why you need to be thankful for the existence of the NHS, spare a thought for 30-year old John Pennington of Los Angeles, who suffered a brain injury, collapsed lungs, and other complications whilst travelling as a passenger in a car crash.

After being in a coma for 6-months he miraculously woke up shocking the nurse who was watching over him.

Whilst having no recollection of his deep sleep, he does remember that his first thoughts on re-gaining consciousness, was that it was time to go to work, but for some reason, only to find himself strapped to a bed in the hospital.

But what really brought him back to reality with a bump was when he was quickly presented with a hospital bill totalling $2.5m – not including two rounds of re-hab under the Nevada Community Enrichment Program or care since his injury.

He was then informed that he’d reached the limit of his lifetime insurance with Florida Blue Cross so set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his treatment, but as this “wasn’t going anywhere”, his lawyer finally stepped in to resolve the issue and help cover the costs.

Believe it or not but John has now returned to his old position as the Loss Prevention Coordinator for The Grandview at Las Vegas.

Of course being a Tuesday I was joined once again by Margaret Mills who took us back to the coaching days of old, before the arrival of the railways.

Margaret looked at two Essex based pioneers of coach travel – George Shillibeer and Walter Hancock and if you missed what Margaret told me you can catch it all again here: –

I very much hope you will be able to join me once again next week,
Scott
