Essex cricketing legend talks about his playing days in England team

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

The football season may be over, but the many sports fans on the station are looking forward to the cricket season just as much – maybe because England are winning a few games at the moment!

Our cricket show 98 Not Out, hosted by Daren Mootoo, enters its 6th season of providing news and insights from the local, county and international cricket scene.

England recently beat the West Indies and debutant Gus Atkinson took 12 wickets – beating John Lever’s record of 10 wickets on his debut, set in 1976.

John is an Essex legend and Daren managed to catch up with him at Brentwood Cricket Club’s Cricket Week, where John talked about his days playing for England in the 1970s and 1980s.

Daren also met up with regular Phoenix FM contributor Don Topley. Don played for Essex for 9 seasons in the 1980s and 1990s, winning the County Championship in 1991 and 1992. Don also keeps a close eye on his son Reece, who is also an England regular.

You can hear all of the interviews again at phoenixfm.com.
