The bargain of the century

For a change we were able to report some good news for a change!

Well at least it was good news for an Australian charity who seem to have secured the bargain of the century after they purchased a plot of land and property, worth millions of Australian dollars for just AUS$1.

So how did they achieve this?

Well the people at St Giles who provide support to people with disabilities, spotted a “FOR SALE” notice outside the NEWSTEAD HEIGHTS SCHOOL which had closed back in 2017.

While the property might otherwise have been worth a lot of money in 1984, St Giles had come to an arrangement with The Department of Education to let them take ownership for a mere 50 cents, on the understanding that they, St Giles, would have the right to re-claim ownership should the property ever go up for sale.

Although it took over 2 years of painstaking work, it was eventually proved that the agreement was still valid and so St Giles have been able to re-gain the land and buildings for a mere AUS1 dollar.

Newstead is probably the second-highest sought-after suburb in the Launceston area which means that a block of land in the area is worth between $300,000 to $400,000 so the school could actually now be worth millions.

A good piece of detective work there then!

In the second hour of today’s programme I was joined, as usual on a Tuesday, by Margaret Mills who regaled a very sad but true story of a murder in the Essex village of Clavering.

This involved a woman, named Rebecca Lawe who way back in 1862, murdered her farm labourer, husband.
