Can you bank on anything these days?

Today we reported on a bank heist that didn’t go quite to plan and also on self service check-out machines that seem to have started looking for tips! Really – yes totally true – read on!

But firstly we heard about the bank robbery that didn’t go quite to plan.

James Timothy Kelly entered the PNC Bank in Hollywood, Florida carrying a mesh bag and handed over a note to the bank teller which read: “Give me the money.”

However he didn’t expect the reaction of the employee who pretended not to have read it, and instead handed him a withdrawal form.

Although Kelly told her, “I’m not here for that. I’m here to rob you.”

The bank employee pretended that there were “computer issues”, and told the man to take a seat.

Amazingly Kelly complied so when, police, who had been alerted to the situation, arrived through the back entrance, they were able to arrest the suspect who was still sitting in the lobby.

He was taken to the FBI’s local office where after admitting the offence now faces a potential 20-year prison sentence.

A good and productive day’s work for him then!

Later in the programme we moved on to learn about machines that seem to have developed minds of their own and are now trying to encourage people to hand over extra payments to them.

After running her shopping which consisted of a pre-packed chicken caesar wrap and a bottle of Vita coconut water through a self-service til at NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, a woman was more than a little surprised when the machine asked her if she would like to leave a tip!

It even suggested options of 15, 18 or even 20% of her bill.

Some people suggested that since it was a “self-service machine”, that by rights it ought to have been offering a discount to the customer, who was after all doing all the work.

But amazingly it seems that some people have actually been made to feel “guilty” if they didn’t pay up and so have actually complied with the request.

Someone else complained that an airport worker asked for a tip to check in her baggage. A charge was quoted and the employee said, “you have to pay by credit card, but you can tip in cash.’

Well I never! What is the world coming to?

I look forward to enjoying your company again tomorrow – tip free,
Scott
