Artist Feature: Johnny Trevino

We’ve been playing out Out Of Place by Johnny Trevino recently here on Phoenix FM – and we caught up with Johnny to find out a little more about his life and his love of music.

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I am a father of 3 young adults, and husband of 20 years to my wife Theresa. I am a retired Army Veteran. I served two combat tours as a Cavalry Scout in the 101st Airborne Division. I chose Cavalry Scout at the time because I was afraid of heights, and I was avoiding the airborne infantry. Needless to say, heights are no longer a big deal.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

My earliest memories are often tied to the artist my mother listened to. Artists like Boston and Journey still make me think of my mom cleaning the house while this was blasting in the background. Middle and High school bands taught me to read sheet music and how to really keep rhythm. I taught myself FL Studio and one thing led to another.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

Boston, Randy Travis, Michael Jackson, Cypress Hill, Genesis, Whitney Houston, Pat Benatar, Prince (one of the greatest guitarists of all time I might add), Eric Clapton (another great), Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr, Madonna, Reba McEntire, Journey, Dolly Parton, and The Judds.

Which producers inspire the music that you make today?

Bo Burnham, Calvin Harris, Timberland, Benny Blanco, Rick Ruben, Sia, Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, Dr. Dre, Charlie Puth. Way too many to list here.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

I created “Out of Place” to be a timeless outsider’s anthem. I like to write and produce music that comes with unifying messages about divisive topics. I have a lot of material and stories from my life to fuel this kind of music, so it is easier to pull from a source that is important to you.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

“Out of Place” is my first release to date. I am currently working on four more tracks.

What do you enjoy listening to at the moment?

Pop music is where I placed my banner because I like the backing track creation the best. It’s the most fun, I think. Sometimes you also get powerful messages in the performance.

Halsey, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Staind (Aaron Lewis) – these artists and many more have heavily influenced my work today when it comes to creating the music track.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

Ohh man. So many!! Benny Blanco and Charlie Puth are amazing producers in the same genre. Jack Harlow, Drake, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne are amazing in their respective genres. Producing music for these guys would be a dream come true.

What are your plans for the future?

I hope to keep improving, as a father, husband, producer, and most importantly as a human being that lives on this planet with other humans just like myself. People that think, look, act, pray, and understand the world around them differently than I do. I want to improve how well I can find that common thread that binds us together.

Hopefully I get to keep making more music that inspires, challenges thought, and gets stuck inside your head till you go crazy!

Where we can we find your music?

You can find me on all streaming services including YouTube.
