Diccon, the Barber Surgeon and the Goodwyfe Mary from the Companye of Merrie Folke talked about The Tudor Festival at Ingatestone Hall on 20th and 21st of May.

The event is a reconstruction of the May day Fayre of 1553. There is gossip at the Hall that royal visitors may attend.  Visitors will find “much merriment, with music, dancing, divers crafts and even a puppet show”. All character will be dressed in Tudor costume and will also include an archer, an armourer, and a “cunning man” who is up to no good.  The event is between 11 am – 5 pm, with normal entrance fees applying.

Birthdays Quiz.

Above, Steve Winwood in 1967.

Below, performing at the Coronation concert.

Steve Winwood recently celebrated his 75th birthday. We heard his 1986 UK no 13, USA no 1 – Higher love – winner of the Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best male vocal performance.

Enya is 62 years old We heard her 1990 no 1 in the UK, Belgium, Ireland and Switzerland & USA no 27 – Orinoco Flow.

Petula Clark CBE is 90 years old. We heard her 1964 track – Downtown. USA no 1, selling over a million 45rpm records. UK no 2 and Top 10 in five more countries. Grammy award for Best Rock and roll record.

Thanks to Chris and Bob in Harlow, Chris in Guildford, Patrick in Ingatestone and Pastor Peter in the studio for taking part. Returning to winning ways today with 3 points was Patrick.

I was joined in the studio by Bonnie Minihane, the Brentwood Foodbank manager, Julie Bowler from the Distribution Centre and Peter Graham, the Pastor at the Doddinghurst Road Community Church.

Since being founded twelve years ago, the Brentwood Foodbank is now the busiest it has ever been. Pastor Peter stated that the by the month leading up to Christmas 2018 they were working with a then record number of 100 people. Now they are seeing that number every week. Last month they gave away over three and a half tons of food. For this to function, thirty to forty volunteers are involved. Bonnie and Julie spoke about the logistical issues of managing that amount of food going through the foodbank every week. Donations are obviously essential and are all gratefully received. Monetary gifts enable regular shopping trips that need to take place.  Julie emphasised that no-one is turned away. Pastor Peter talked about the need for the Foodbank not to be “just a window through which we throw food”. He said that they are in contact with 992 individuals. Working alongside sixty other organisations, they seek to help those that they come in contact with in other aspects of their lives.

Marvin Gaye – I heard it through the grapevine. Bonnie Minihane  chose this track as it is one she has always liked.

Joni Tada Eareckson – I’m alone, yet not alone – Julie Bowler said that this song reminded us that whatever trouble we are are in, we need never feel alone.

Josh Garrels – Farther along – Pastor Peter Graham said the lyrics of this track speak about the reality that at the time of a difficulty we may struggle to understand what is happening, Father along we will understand that through the love of God we will be able to “live in the sunshine”.
