The subject chosen today by Margaret Mills concerned the life of Gladys Turbard, who was known as “The Queen of Laindon”.
It seems that Gladys was renowned for being the first woman employed by the Post Office in Basildon, spending 36 years delivering mail from 1941 until her retirement in 1977. In the early years her round was generally rural.
