Artist Feature: Marvin Dark

You may have heard us playing Can’t Save Me by Marvin Dark on Phoenix FM recently – but who is Marvin? We caught up with him to find out more …

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

The singer you didn’t know you needed until now. I am a one of kind talent and human being from Los Angeles, California. Consistently growing and putting the things I’ve learned into my music is a huge passion of mine. In my twenty-six years of life, music and my mom have been the only two things that remain through all seasons. With a music history rooted in oldies and love songs, the music I create is timeless, thoughtful and funky. I intend to keep it that way.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

Growing up with a mom who worked a lot, R&B music was one of the ways we connected. The connection and bond ignited my passion for music. Being so young and being able to feel any emotion and play a song to heal kept my motivation to see what else music could do. Music has kept me sane. Music is passion.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

Being introduced to artists like Usher, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson and so many more just felt like home as a kid. As I got older, I definitely felt a shift. I found that oldies resonated with me more than anything. Musicians such as Marvin Gaye, The O’Jays, Smokey Robinson give me all the feels now. Always some oldies in my playlists. Always.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

You know when you’re sleep and you wake up in the middle of the night and chug a glass of water.. that’s what my music is. The glass of water. Refreshing and new. Melodic, meaningful, and a whole vibe every time. The bridge between nostalgia and modern love. Addicting to the ears, mind, and heart.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

Throughout the last decade, I’ve released music when my heart feels right about it. I generally take my time between releases. I have a music catalogue that expands over 40 songs. I have not put out an album but have put out classic singles and EPs over the years.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

Whenever I’m able to listen to music nowadays, you can hear me blasting Frank Ocean or Brent Faiyaz. I’ve found that I am really inspired by their originality. Their own style. It’s about the music but beyond that, seeing other artists successfully being themselves; doing their own thing helps me feel more confident when I get in my head. Like I see it’s possible.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

When I envision myself collaborating with other artists, I tend to gravitate towards lyrics and melodies. Singers like Sza, Miguel, Frank Ocean, and Kehlani all push for authenticity. It’s shows in the music made. In the future, I’m sure we will cross paths and create some bangers.

What are your plans for the future?

In the next six months, I will be releasing my debut album. I’ve managed to complete a body of work that I am so proud of. A new sound and wave. Accompanied by an entire roll-out, this next chapter will be something to remember.
