Today is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) which is observed every year on 21 March.
This date was picked for its significance, as Down Syndrome happens when the 21st chromosome is triplicated – as in 21/3.
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) was originally launched in 2006 and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2012.
WDSD is now celebrated in more than 60 countries around the globe. The organizations and communities in these countries promote WDSD to raise awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome.
Activities and events that take place on March 21 showcase the abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. These events also focus on encouraging independence, self-advocacy, and freedom of choices for people with Down syndrome.
People wear odd brightly colored socks on WDSD because chromosomes resemble socks. WDSD celebration crafts can include making sock puppets. You can follow these activities by searching #lotsofsocks on social media.
