A fine time was had by all

Today we heard about a man who was fined for taking his son out of school during term time and what he’s done to try and get his own back.

Now I have to be honest, I love this.

Last year 44-year old Stephen Doherty ignoring a warning from St Ambrose Barlow RC High School in Salford, Greater Manchester, about their strict attendance rules, took his 13-year old son, Alfie out of school on a family holiday for a couple of days.

The holiday had actually been booked before Alfie had secured a place at the high school and Mr Doherty hadn’t realised that the area’s schools had different term times.

The school demanded that Mr Doherty prove that the holiday had been booked before Alfie had been accepted by them, but in spite of providing the requested evidence, the school presented him with a £240 fine.

On the evening of the 1st February, Mr Doherty was greeted with a serious faced son, who confessed that he’d not been in school that day.

Asking for an explanation for his son’s absence Alfie said that the teachers were on strike!

As a result of this, and given how seriously the school clearly took unauthorised absences, he decided to “fine” the school the sum of £120 for each of the two teachers who should have taught Alfie that day.

He submitted his bill and payment details giving the school a deadline for payment of 14th February.

The school has yet to respond officially but ordered Mr Doherty to remove his post from Facebook quoting GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATIONS!

Later in the show we looked at leisure activities.

So you go out to a restaurant for a nice meal and a quiet drink and then someone decides to have an alcoholic drink which included a sparkler.

Next thing you know the sparkler ignited the drink and then the restaurant decorations ignited turning the venue into a fireball.

Diners at the Caffe Di Milano in Birmingham, leaped from their seats in panic to avoid being incinerated.

A staff member galvanised into action attempted to douce the flames but eventually the sprinkler system was activated and the fire extinguished before the fire brigade arrived on the scene.

A similar situation occurred at a Latin American restaurant, popular with Love Island celebs, in Mayfair in December after Christmas decorations ignited resulting in the evacuation of 300 diners and the attendance of 5 fire engines and 35 firefighters.

The cause of that fire has still to be established.

What I want to know is did the diners in each restaurant still have to pay their bills or did they hotfoot it away at a rate of knots?

Well on that cheery note I’m also going to take off home at speed and hope to see you once again tomorrow,
Scott
