Graham Headley from the Brentwood Christians Against Poverty (CAP) chatted about the pressures that people are feeling at this time through the financial crisis and how this is heightened by expectations around Christmas. He gave a useful list of tips for avoiding debt through over spending on presents and provisions for Christmas celebrations. One was to decide on the amount you are prepared to spend and then go and get the cash. This will make it very obvious if you are spending more than you anticipated. He also recommended the podcasts and posts by Martin Lewis, who recommends Christians Against Poverty (CAP) as a useful organisation to provide help for those who are in debt. Graham told us how from small beginnings, CAP now had over 300 centres and 800 affiliated churches. He emphasised that CAP is non-judgemental and open to everyone, regardless of their faith. The assistance offered is completely free. Phoning the free confidential helpline goes to the national head office which will put you in touch with the local CAP centre. The next step in the process is a meeting in the home of the person who has been in touch between an advisor, Graham’s role locally, and an accompanying befriender. This introductory meeting leads to a second meeting where the facts and figures are examined. These are then sent to the head office where financial experts will devise possible routes out of the debt. At a third meeting these routes will be explained, and the client chooses how they want to proceed.
