On this week’s Phoenix Sport show, I was delighted to meet Bob Theobald and Terry Smith from Brentwood Bowling Club, who came in primarily to tell me all about the open weekend being held there on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May.

They are hopeful this will help the long-established club – originally founded in 1908 at the now-gone Yorkshire Grey pub in Brentwood High Street – attract new members, in addition to the trial and one-to-one sessions they regularly run.

Bob Theobald from Brentwood Bowling Club

There is a thriving social membership at the club, with events frequently held at the clubhouse and for Bob, the social side of the club is a big part since losing his wife a few years ago.

He told me that during the first lockdown, when the club was forced to close, it brought it home to him how much he missed bowls and his friends at the club.

I was also interested to learn that Terry is a now-retired former Fleet Street sportswriter, having written for the Daily Mirror and Daily Telegraph in that capacity before a spell working for Barry Hearn’s Matchroom organisation.

You can hear the show on the above link, with my conversation with Bob and Terry just over 23 minutes in, and for more information about the club, visit their website here
