This week I was delighted to be joined on the show by Kim Coster, head of women’s and girl’s football at Billericay Town who took time out whilst watching the club’s men’s first team play the final match of their National League South season at Braintree Town to tell me about her background in football, the women’s and girl’s set-up at New Lodge and the very successful season the women’s first team have just had, which saw them crowned champions of the FA Women’s National League Division One South East as well as enjoying a good FA Cup run.
Although their male counterparts have endured a miserable campaign – with a last-placed finish ensuring a return to the Isthmian Premier League next season for the first time since 2018 – they left the NLS on a high with a 1-0 win at Braintree, who finished 17th.
Elsewhere in the National League South, Concord Rangers signed off with a 2-1 win over Welling United at the Aspect Arena which ensured a 14th-placed finish, whilst Chelmsford City ended the campaign in 19th position after losing 2-1 in their final match away to play-off bound Ebbsfleet United.
With one game remaining of their National League campaign, Dagenham & Redbridge can still mathematically sneak into the play-offs.
But the odds are stacked against them after they lost 3-1 away to Solihull Moors, who have already booked a play-off berth and moved up to third place because of their win.
The Daggers face second-placed Wrexham in their final match of the league campaign, at the Chigwell Construction Stadium next Sunday.
In Cricket’s County Championship Division One, Essex continued their four-day match against Yorkshire at the County Ground in Chelmsford, and day three ended with the visitors ahead by 22 runs, with Harry Brook and ex-England test skipper Joe Root among those troubling the hosts’ bowlers.
The Essex Cricket League is back underway for the 2022 season, and Saturday’s victors included Billericay who are already adjusting well to life in the 1st XI Division One, following their relegation from the Premier Division last year.
They beat visitors Harold Wood by an impressive 94 runs, scoring 290 in total, with new recruit Grant Roelofsen leading the way as the South African scored 132 of them.
