Local efforts to help Ukraine

Today I spoke to Caroline Stillwell who has been involved in a local campaign to send a container load of essential supplies to the Polish/Ukranian border which leaves this week.

Caroline Stillwell

You can listen to our chat here –

After 7 carloads on this occasion Caroline is still going to be involved in further shipments. If you would like to donate these are the details.

NEW Ukraine Collection – Thank you to everyone for the huge response you have been amazing. Steve from Boxers Barbers in Wickford is driving to Ukraine next Thursday with 2 trucks. These are the items needed (please only bring from the list so we can fit as much as possible of what is really needed) no duvets clothes or bedding needed for this collection It would be so helpful if these items were boxed and labelled if not we can do this at the collection point.

Collection Point Sunday 6th March 12-2pm and Monday 7th March 10.30-12 collection. Ramsden Bellhouse Baptist Church, Church Road, Ramsden Bellhouse, Billericay CM11 1PJ

Balaclavas, Black Snoods, Black Fingerless Gloves, £ shop reading glasses, First aid kits, Field Bandages, Strong paracetamol Ibuprofen Cold and flu treatment, Antiseptic cream, Bandages, Sterile dressings, Surgical tape, Wound closure strips, Vapour rub, multi vitamins, Barrier cream, Cough syrup, Antiseptic body wipes, Hand gel, Blood bags, Baby bottles, Pre made baby milk, 3 in 1 coffee sachet, Cuppa soups, Toothbrushes, Tooth paste, Body wash, Wet wipes, Packets of tissues, Nappies, sanitary towels, Tampons, Plastic cups/plates and cutlery, Torches with batteries, Candles, Matches.

There are other collections going on in our area too.

Also Alex and Karen are collecting at Merrymeade Tearooms in Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood. First aid equipment and paracetamol and pain killers also needed !

Or you can donate to the numerous charities offering support to the Ukrainian people. I won’t list them all here but the simplest way is just to do an internet search for “Help Ukraine”

With all financial contributions online, it is worth making sure you know where your money is going first – double check the organisation is real and is being shared by a trustworthy source.

The Chequers Pub in Billericay started a collection point for essentials earlier this week. They published a list of items needed and were immediately overwhelmed with the response.

Cath Thwaites who runs the pub wrote – This was the idea of Tony Lipman-Collins and Wayne Griffiths. These guys are driving to Poland to deliver the load. They have asked me to help xxx so I can’t take the credit. What a fantastic thing they are doing xxx

Very quickly Cath had to post –

Due to an overwhelming response from you lovely lot, The guys have said not to collect any more as they may not have room. Thank you all so so much. If anyone knows of anyone else going over, ask them to get in touch as we may have stuff left over xxxx

And Phil Bradley of Billericay Dogs wrote –

We are all aware of the events in Ukraine, and marvellous efforts are being made to send food and medicines etc over for refugees. People were encouraged to take their pets with them to keep them safe, and they will also need to be fed, otherwise people will be sharing any rations they have with their animals. In the Billericay Dogs group we are doing a collection of pet food; dog food, cat food etc, and we have a contact who is shipping supplies over there.

If you have any pet food to spare I’m collecting it. I will happily come to you and collect at any time.

We cannot let Putin win. A tin of pet food isn’t going to stop a tank, but it will help the morale of the Ukrainian people, and show them that they are not alone, and neither are their pets. Thanks for anything you can give.

I’m also going to be at Queens Park country park car park just off Rosebay Avenue Billericay on Saturday and Sunday at 10am until 11am.

People can email Phil at philipbradley@gmail.com to arrange to donate.

I try to present a jolly, fun, radio show each week here on Phoenix FM but this week it would be true to say that I’ve overwhelmed with anger and sadness about what Putin’s Russia is doing in Ukraine. However the fantastic response of our local community has lifted my spirits and given me hope.
