How to maximise space in your home

The UK housing market is tough to break into, and with the average age of a first-time homeowner having risen by three years over the past decade, many are still stuck in the vicious cycle of renting. Clearly, not everyone is fortunate enough to have a home with ample space, and whether you’re living in a cosy house or a small flat, it can be tricky to create a space that doesn’t feel cramped and claustrophobic.

While there’s no quick fix to adding a few extra square metres to your living room, there are plenty of tips and tricks that can help you make the most of your space, no matter what size it is. Between hanging mirrors in the right spots and choosing furniture that doubles as a storage solution, you’re sure to find an idea or two to enhance your living space.

Read on to find out how to maximise space in your home.

Mirrors

A well-placed mirror can work wonders in making a space appear larger. Mirrors reflect light which opens out a space and creates depth. Opt for a mirror with a slim frame or intricate detailing to further enhance the lightening effect. Mirrored furniture can also be a great option to encourage light reflections across all corners of the room and will create a striking aesthetic too.

Storage space

We’re not saying you have to alphabetise your spice rack or colour-coordinate your underwear drawer, but organising your storage space around the house will make it easier to store items neatly to create more space. For example, consider how you organise your kitchen and if there’s a more efficient way to store your cookware or ingredients.

Minimalism

You might think that smaller furniture is the best option to make the most of your space but surprisingly, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Using fewer pieces of larger furniture will create a statement without crowding the room. Take this minimalistic approach to accessories too and you’ll avoid making the space look busy and cluttered.

Functional furniture

If you’re pushed for space, getting creative with your furniture will help you make the most of what you’ve got. Incorporate furniture which is functional rather than just fashionable. Think of things like a storage chest that doubles as a coffee table and an ottoman with space to store magazines. Be sure to look at your financial situation carefully before making any large purchases.

Neutral colours

You’ve heard the adage that black is slimming, so you’ll be aware that dark colours draw things in and make them appear smaller. If you’re hoping to emphasise the space you have, your best bet is to choose soft, neutral shades to bring light into the room. Think shades of white, cream, beige, and greys. Prefer a touch of colour? Subtle pastels will be your friend here, such as pale pink and light blue.
