Artist Feature: Hummingbird XYZ

We’ve been playlisting A Star Transformed from Hummingbird XYZ recently here on Phoenix FM – but who is Hummingbird XYZ? Read on to find out more …

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a pianist, guitarist, DJ, producer, and composer who divides my life between Paris, Montréal, and New York.

Who did you study piano under?

I studied with Yoshiko Shamoto, an expert in an ancient Japanese piano technique that incorporates circular motion methodology.

Who are your inspirations?

At first I was inspired by classical music, but then I gradually discovered jazz and electronic music, so I have many sources of inspiration now – Alison Wonderland, Thelonius Monk, Agnes Obel, Hania Rani, Kelly Moran, FKA Twigs, Debussy, Satie, Bartok, Bach, Benjamin Clementine, Rachmaninov, John Coltrane, Massive Attack and even Chopin.

How would you describe your songwriting?

My piano compositions are born out of a fascination with the instrument and a desire to explore its sonic and harmonic possibilities, in its own way. I deliver optimistic, intimate, introspective albums with sensual, free and hypnotic melodies.

As a musician who have your collaborations been with?

I have collaborated with Eric Delegard (a Grammy award-winning engineer), Dior, Luc Besson, Nils Frahm, Horace Bray, and Kindly Rewind Records among others.

But my dream collaboration would be with Ravel, or Chopin.

Of current artists, I would love to work with Lana Del Rey, hope she’s listening!

Do you have any other works available?

I’ve got other songs, and an album of just pure piano and voice, unreleased, and hidden.

Do you have any plans for the future?

My future plans include incorporating the digital gloves made by Imogen Heap, while I play keys to trigger video and audio sequences.
