One 2 Three Friday 8th October 21 with Lynne Dejoodt and Pauline Randall

Lynne talked about the Chess Homeless Big Sleep Out. Pauline encouraged us to go to the High Street Market in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church Billericay on 9th of October.

The Big Sleep out this year is on 15th of October, rather than in November. Normally people bring sleeping bags that are rested on cardboard, but this year tents will be allowed. There is a toilet and shower block. Entertainment will be provided by the band The Vision and food will also be provided. This event is the biggest annual fundraiser for  www.chesshomeless.org. So far seventy people have signed up. Lynne hoped that one hundred would attend and be sponsored. During the pandemic the work of CHESS has expanded to include three more areas, including Brentwood. They have also expanded the number of properties owned by the organisation to thirteen, including one in Epping. This means that sixty six users can be accommodated. CHESS aims to work towards those they meet on the streets eventually becoming able to live independently. More information about CHESS, including current vacancies, can be found on  the website and by phoning 01245281104.

Pauline phoned in from St. Mary Magdalene’s church in Billericay High Street, where she and twelve stall holders had been working to organise everything for the market on Saturday 9th between 10 am – 4 pm. Everything was being done to ensure the safety of those coming  to the market. This was the return of an event that had been previously held for a number of years and had always been very popular.
