On a day when sporting history went on to be made, with 18 year old British Tennis sensation Emma Raducanu’s extraordinary triumph at the U.S. Open, we saw a busy afternoon of action.

In Football, Cristiano Ronaldo began his second spell at Manchester United and made an immediate impact, scoring two goals on his second debut for the club in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.

West Ham United remain unbeaten so far this season, but the Hammers had to settle for a point as they drew 0-0 at Southampton.

Leyton Orient continued their good start to the season, goals by Aaron Drinan, Tom James, Theo Archibald and Harry Smith securing them a thumping 4-0 victory over struggling Oldham Athletic at Brisbane Road and taking them up to third place in EFL League Two.

In the National League, a 2-1 win away to King’s Lynn Town saw Dagenham & Redbridge maintain their place at the top of the table, but Southend United slipped to 14th following a dismal 3-1 loss at FC Halifax Town.

Saturday’s National League South action saw a win for Chelmsford City and a draw for Concord Rangers, but defeats for both Braintree Town and Billericay Town.

Billericay travelled to Dorking Wanderers in our featured match, and a 2-1 defeat means Kevin Watson’s side are still without a win this season.

But in the Isthmian Premier League Bowers & Pitsea are off the bottom, a Lewis Manor hat-trick securing their first league victory of the campaign as they beat Wingate & Finchley 3-1 at the Len Salmon Stadium.

The First Qualifying round of the FA Vase saw a number of local teams involved, with a particularly notable victory for Southend Manor of the Essex Senior League who scored 8 goals at Biggleswade United without reply.

In Rugby, there wasn’t much joy for most of our local teams in action on Saturday but in London 1 North, there was a win for Thurrock who triumphed 26-19 at home to Southend Saxons.

And it was a pleasure to be joined in the studio by Daren Mootoo from our Cricket show 98 Not Out as we discussed the controversial cancellation of the fifth test between England and India.
