On a weekend when Gareth Southgate’s England side could make football history, I assessed their chances of winning the European Championship final against Italy.

And I had plenty of local football action to talk about, with a number of our local non-League sides involved in pre-season friendlies.

These included Brentwood Town, who gained a 2-0 win at home to Phoenix Sports, and Andy Gardiner came on at half-time and full-time to describe the action for us.

In Tennis, Ashleigh Barty of Australia became the Wimbledon Women’s Singles champion by beating the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova in the final.

England’s Rugby Union side scored a fine 70-14 win over Canada at Twickenham, whilst an impressive performance by the England Cricket team saw them clinch the one-day intermational series as they beat Pakistan by 52 runs.

And in local cricket, Chelmsford remain the pacesetters in the Essex League 1st XI Premier Division after winning by six wickets in their match at Colchester and East Essex.
