Nigeria had always delivered in terms of talents, and the ’90s might be the most successful time for the national football team. In 1993, Babayaro, Kanu, Oruma and the other players triumph at the FIFA U-17 World Championship and later perform well at the World Cups and Olympic Games.
Super Eagles these days continue victorious traditions and will play in the friendly against Mexico on the 4th of July. Thanks to the legendary players of the past, current footballers have somebody to look up to in terms of career. Let’s check some of the most memorable figures of the ’90s Super Eagles squad:
Taribo West
West is the main freak of his time: he braided colourful pigtails, scored important goals, threw a jersey at Lucescu when he played for Inter, and even moved to Nevio Scala’s Spartak Moscow.
His career started at the gorgeous Auxerre, with whom he won the championship and earned a big contract at Inter, but then everything went badly. From Inter, Taribo left for Milan, and after the Rossoneri, in seven years he changed seven teams and rarely played anywhere.
Now West has turned into a priest: he meditates, reads prayers and blesses the parish in the church.
Jay-Jay Okocha
Many people think that the most important thing that Okocha did in football is that he helped Ronaldinho adapt to Europe. But this is not the case. After four years at PSG, he came to England and melted the hearts of conservatives and British soccer lovers, fans of Vinnie Jones-players type.
Okocha moved to Bolton when the club was drowning in the relegation zone. JJ has done magic and pulled the hopeless out of danger and turned the club into one of England’s most compelling projects. It seems that everyone on the islands loved (and loves) him, and his feints are still played in the brightest cuts in the history of the Premier League.
Surprisingly, the brightest player in the history of Nigeria (7-time holder of the title of the best football player in the country) never got into a superclub. But his nephew, Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi, has all the chances in his 25.
However, now Okocha is not happy: he is suspected of a major real estate fraud in Scotland. And they say that the sheriff of Aberdeen is very serious, and you can’t escape justice with a beautiful trick.
Sunday Oliseh
After great performances at the World Cup-94 and Olympic Games-96, Oliseh flew to Juventus in transit through Ajax but did not play much: 8 games in Serie A.
Then there was Borussia, Bochum (loan), Genk and a smooth transition to coaching. Interestingly, Bochum had planned a full-fledged contract with Oliseh but refused Sunday when a powerful Nigerian smashed the nose of teammate Vahid Hashemian during training.
In 2015-2016, Oliseh coached the main national team of Nigeria, and after a couple of years he tried to revive Fortuna, but so far nothing interesting has come of it, and it’s a pity: Sunday, at least, was able to deliver an excellent shot.
