Pandemic blues; how to cope with stress and anxiety during these difficult times

An often overlooked aspect of dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic is managing the stress that comes forward because of the fear of catching the virus and isolation. Everyone is busy trying to protect themselves from the disease, which should be done as prevention is better than cure. However, more attention needs to be diverted towards the effects of fear and staying alone on an individual’s mental health.

Technology has played an exceptionally significant role in keeping individuals worldwide staying connected, which helped release tension and anxiety. It allowed people to be together in times of need and make it easier to make efforts; a young boy was able to order drugs from Canada for his grandmother, who lives there alone with the help of technology. It is important to live in the moment as life is really short. People are doing the silliest of the things possible to keep themselves happy and away from pressure, from filming pointless videos to doing prank calls on people on the opposite side of the world. Here’s a list of all the exciting things you can do in the comfort of your home to stay happy and stress-free.

  • Read a book:

Engaging yourself with an activity that requires reading helps you deal with negative thoughts and enhances your intellectual capability.

If you don’t like reading, I recommend at least giving it a try. It will make it easier to pass your free time while simultaneously increasing your vocabulary and imagination skills. Moreover, people believe that reading develops empathy and improves focusing abilities.

  • Play video games:

If you miss your friends terribly but cannot meet them, try playing video games with them. Winning a game induces a feeling of accomplishment which increases dopamine secretion, making you feel better.

It provides comfort and allows people to bond together virtually. Therefore, if previously your busy schedule made you leave the world of gaming behind, it is time you dive back in.

  • Find a new hobby:

Have you always been intrigued about baking stuff? Explore your horizons and try out different things. You have plenty of free time in your hands, research what interests you, and take one step at a time. In this way, you will be channelling your energy positively and feel purposeful.

  • Try exercising:

The best way to deal with depression and anxiety is exercise. According to research, exercise improves the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. Furthermore, it also stimulates the release of endorphins, generally regarded as the happy hormone.

Therefore, develop a routine that includes an everyday workout. If you are new to the workout department, try searching for workout videos on youtube for better guidance.

 Conclusion:

Almost all of us are struggling with mental health problems due to the pandemic. Our collective responsibility is to be there for everyone during times of need and extend our utmost support to those who need it. Empathy makes this world a better place.
