In football it proved to be a memorable day for Hornchurch of the Isthmian Premier League, playing at Wembley Stadium for the first time ever in the FA Trophy final.

After going a goal down to Hereford of the National League North, the Urchins staged a superb late comeback with goals from Charlie Ruff, Liam Nash and Ellis Brown securing a 3-1 win and the prized silverware.

For Urchins manager Mark Stimson it was a big personal triumph, as this was the fifth occasion he has been an FA Trophy winner – first as a player with Canvey Island, then as a manager with Grays Athletic (twice), Stevenage and now Hornchurch.

There was disappointment in the National League for Dagenham & Redbridge.

Following a largely inconsistent and indifferent season, Daryl McMahon’s men had put together a superb run of 8 games without defeat to give them an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, but those hopes were ended with a 2-1 loss away to Chesterfield.

In Cricket, day three of the County Championship match at Chelmsford saw Essex edge ahead against Warwickshire, helped by half-centuries from Alastair Cook (57) and Ryan ten Doeschate (56), but a draw looked a likely outcome due to rain and bad light disrupting the proceeedings.

On the show I had a chat with Echo sportswriter Chris Phillips, which can be heard on the link from 00:31:40.
