Artist Feature: Shojon

We’ve been playlisting Shojon’s latest track Theorem on Phoenix FM over the last week or so – and we caught up with Shojon to talk about his life and music.

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I am Shojon, a creative hailing from the royal borough of Greenwich founder of That SP Studios (TSS), Aftersessions and do-er of many things.  But I know we’re here to talk about the music won’t bore you with the business stuff today.

How did you get the name Shojon?

From the infinite source of knowledge! One day it just clicked my full name, John Shownmi, Sho – John, Super High Output (which is the energy and quality given), Sho – east London slang for something really good, or fo’ sho US southern slang – ‘Sho’ in this case meaning ‘Sure’ and I’m now a John that is sure of myself and ability to accept the challenge and overcome obstacles that are needed to achieve greatness.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

I would say my earliest experience of really listening to music in my life was around the time of Oxide & Neutrino, Shanks & Big Foot, The Streets. I would go crazy and start bouncing off the walls watching MTV Base and Channel U. I would consume hours of music daily!

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

My music style and genres are likely to change with each project, right now I’m working an emo-rap indie pop style, but the one thing at the base of my music is that I want you to feel. I create music based on emotion if I create a party song you’re going to want to party or a song about working you’re going to want to grind hard I aim to resonate to the audience on an emotive level.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

That list is like 12,000 plus if you put into account all my years as an engineer and the works I’ve recorded for many artists, but even thinking about it now there’s a fair few songs from way back that I’ve featured on for fun under different names, but as Shojon vocalist hmmm, that’s probably about 20 at the moment that are released, I’ve done a lot of features. But have another 30 recorded ready in the chamber!

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

ESCAPE THE BOX!!! My guy Ziey Kizzy absolute genius! Loving their stuff at the moment their EP is going to be amazing. Other than that, I’ve enjoyed the Chip freestyles going at Stormzy and I’ve cried a few times to Olivia Rodrigo – Drivers License too, soooo much emotion.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

There are so many people I want work with and going to work with musically but if I were to have a dream collaboration of any kind, I’d work with someone outside of music just another great creative or thinker and put something unique and interesting together. I’m just going to drop 2 names I’d like to be in a creative space with… Jim Carrey & Russel Brand.

What are your plans for the future?

Cherishing wins, whilst achieving great things. All I know is all of a sudden, I’ve been given a platform to make change, the world is annoyingly looking like a crappy place each day, if I can help change that I can and will!
