We caught up with singer/songwriter Chad Rubin to talk about his life in music.
Tell us a little bit about your yourself?
I was born and raised in Arizona. I left college to tour with a punk reggae band as their drummer/backup vocalist and songwriter.
I went back to college, worked as an electrical engineer in LA and SF and in marketing before leaving my job to open a studio back in Phoenix in 2017.
I’m currently working as Musical Director for a broadcast studio and run a studio. I’m also the Musical Director for films – most recently Sweet Sunshine, available everywhere and streaming on Amazon Prime with over 2 million views.
I write and produce for other artists. Spent the forced time home in 2020 on writing and recording a double album which I have released “Lost in the Jungle”, the first single off of the record.
When did you first start to develop a passion for music?
At a very young age I would sing with my grandmother, and my father would direct me and my sisters to perform for family and friends.
I was kicked out of band a orchestra for playing by ear! As a last option I joined the drummers – I bought a drum kit and started listening to blink-182.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
A singer-songwriter with modern production and clear influences from artists such as Jason Mraz and the Red Hot Chili Peppers but with an original sound of my own.
What music have you recorded and released to date?
I have an EP under my first record deal before I temporarily left to work as an electrical engineer for the FAA. When I left that job I produced my own album and released five singles with producer Curtis Douglas.
I released another with Matthew Keller (“Lydia”) and one with Shayan Amiri (“Long Road.”). My latest single, “Lost in the Jungle”, is from my upcoming album.
Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?
I will always listen to my early influences and favourites such as Jason Mraz, Sublime, Blink 182 and the Chili Peppers.
Recently, I’ve spent my time studying certain producers and singer-songwriters to see what new sounds are trending and how they relate to music from the recent and even older past.
Who would your dream collaboration be with?
I would love to do a duet with Miley Cyrus. I feel like people really underestimate her songwriting ability which I admire
What are your plans for the future?
I will be releasing a single each month with remixes and acoustic versions leading up to the release of my full length, double album in production set to release summer 2021.
Hopefully by then, me and my band can jump back on the road to promote the album.
