Shining a light on a fraud

I guess we generally think of doctors being pretty intelligent people.

Whatever else they might be, they can’t be dumb. Can they?

Or so one might think – but amazingly one of their number was not bright enough to avoid being swindled out of the equivalent of £72,000, into buying an ALADDIN’s LAMP.

It seems that one of the con artists involved had successfully conjured up a fake genie so that it had seemed to appear from the lamp which they subsequently sold to him, promising that the item would bring him health, wealth and good fortune.

But when he got it home he was disappointed to discover that no wish granting genie appeared when he rubbed the lamp.

At this point it suddenly dawned on the good doctor that the genie had actually been one of the men in disguise and that the lamp didn’t after all have any magical powers.

At least the incident took place in the right sort of area of the world, in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The perpetrators had originally demanded a much higher price for the item, but the victim, Laeek Khan had managed to negotiate what he obviously thought was a better deal.

Police are currently on the look out for the perpetrators, who it has since emerged have been conning many other people with their supply of bogus lamps.

Nevertheless I think I’d be looking very closely at the medical certificates before employing the services of that particular doctor.

In the second hour of today’s show, Margaret Mills dropped by to tell us about a military detachment stationed in Rochford at a time where Napoleon’s forces were threatening invasion.

Mercifully this invasion never came about, bearing in mind that reports indicate that this particular military detachment might have had greater success in causing invaders to have died laughing than inflicting any other more lethal injuries.

Listen here to what Margaret said and judge for yourself: –

See you again next week,
