This week I had a reduced football programme to talk about, with the second lockdown meaning there is no non-League action at step 3 and below for the time being. That means no matches in the Isthmian League, Essex Senior League and Thurlow Nunn League until for at least the next four weeks.

But we had the FA Cup First Round Proper, and with the competition having ‘elite’ status it meant that Isthmian North side Canvey Island – who had reached that stage for the first time in 16 years – could go ahead with their tie at Banbury United.

And it proved a memorable day for the Gulls, as they beat their hosts 2-1 to reach the second round.

And Canvey’s local rivals Concord Rangers came agonisingly close to joining them in the draw for the next stage, losing on penalties at League Two Stevenage after the National League South side had held their EFL hosts to a 1-1 draw which went into extra-time.

But National League Dagenham & Redbridge had an excellent win to take them through, as they beat League Two Grimsby Town 3-1 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Another League Two side to go out to National League opposition were troubled Southend United, who lost on penalties at Boreham Wood after extra-time had finished with the score level at 3-3. Leyton Orient also exited the competition, losing 2-1 at home to fellow League Two side Newport County.

Meanwhile in the National League South, we saw another defeat for Braintree Town who lost 2-1 at home to Hungerford Town. But Chelmsford City had a happier day with an emphatic 4-0 win at Welling United.
