We’ve been playing “Is It Really You”, the new single from singer/songwriter Flora Camille and we caught up with Flora to talk about her life and music.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m based in Berlin and from a musical family as my mother is a singer as well – she sings a German band called Bobo In White Wooden Houses who were quite popular after the wall came down.
While growing up I listened a lot to Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, and London Grammar in my teenage years. I think my music is influenced by these musicians, you can hear some Post Malone vibes and also Lana del Rey maybe.
I believe in hermeticism and love to dream lucid. I like to write about the mystical side of life; we are all facing many abysses in our lives and I’m kind of fascinated by them. I try to add a mystical and mysterious vibe to my music, although it will always be within the pop genre.
How would you describe your music?
My genre is Trap Pop – more specifically, a mix of ethereal soundscapes, sampled oriental strings, and bass trap beats topped off with dreamy melodies, making for bewitching songs which linger in the listener’s ear long after being heard.
The music is paired with paradoxical lyrics: a lust for life combined with brooding thoughts about my own indecisiveness and waywardness.
I often reminisce about mystical fervour and vivid delusions and I am fascinated by the idea of a multidimensional spirit who is supposedly living within each of us.
Which artists inspire your music?
You can hear ghosts of the classic 1994 Portishead album “Dummy” and today’s trap pioneer Post Malone weaving their way through my songs. However music lovers frequently compare my work to Kate Bush too.
Tell us about your new song, “Is It Really You”.
This song is about being on the road with a person, and you have this feeling of being in love, but sometimes you’re not sure if you’re in love with a person or just with the feeling of being free.
A lot of the time we are falling in love with people, but actually we are in love with being in love.
Who would your dream collaboration be with?
Depeche Mode, I guess! 🙂
What are your plans for the future?
Since the future is super uncertain right now, I try to live in the moment more than usual … “if you make plans, they will never happen”:)
