Gigs are back…but not as we know them

LIVE GIGS are back…but not as we know them

As a regular gig goer the big thing I’ve missed during the pandemic has been going to live gigs in London, the whole experience from the anticipation on the train journey to meeting up with friends.

My last gig in London was on March 13 just days before my first show on Phoenix FM and apart from a couple of local pub garden gigs it was almost seven months before my next one on Sunday October 4th.  This was a 14-song set from Phoenix FM A-listers BLOXX at Pryzm, a huge club in Kingston put on by local record store Banquet.

It was a very different experience having to check in to the NHS Track & Trace app before entry and you are then escorted through to a table on the ground floor. Face coverings were only needed if you were walking around and there was a table service which I actually quite liked! You are then led upstairs to the venue proper to a designated table though you could choose any. These socially distanced tables reminded me of taking school exams but thankfully there was no exam as Bloxx took to the stage at 8.30 for their first gig in 7 months. They are finally playing songs from and promoting debut August album ‘Lie Out Loud’ and you could see how much this meant to them.

Bloxx- Pryzm, Kingston, Oct 4th 2020

After a blistering start (‘Lie Out Loud’ and ‘Sea Blue’) vocalist Fee said she realized how unfit she had become in lockdown and needed to get back in the gym! Bloxx were actually lockdown discoveries for me and I really enjoyed them and the album is among my top five of the year. After 12 songs they came back for a two song encore and we were all done well before the 10pm curfew.

I have to say the organization of this event was perfect and the staff were fantastic. It was Banquet’s first big event in seven months and boss Jon Tolley was pleased with how it went saying that logistically it worked but with a vastly reduced capacity it is whether events like this can work financially. That is the big factor stopping more events happening for the rest of the year, venues just don’t see it as viable but for Banquet next up for them is two shows this weekend by Everything Everything as well as other events via Zoom.
