Essex Senior League – Saturday 26th September Round-Up

The weekend action started on Friday evening were West Essex and Walthamstow served up a cracker that saw all the goals scored in the first half. Cameron Gray put West Essex into a 2nd minute lead, with Michael Mignot then extending it four minutes later. Stow immediately reduced arrears as Callum Ibe notched in the 9th minute. Then with 15 minutes played Connor Scully equalised; the turnaround completed in the 35th minute when Jon Clements scored what proved to be the winner for Walthamstow. But there was still drama in the second half as Stow had shouts for a penalty turned down, then had to dig deep as West Essex had a number of shots blocked before they could leave Mayesbrook Park with all the points. George Christou is the new Redbridge manager.  He guided Aveley Reserves to a Reserve Division and Reserve Shield double in 2018/19 and  started his Senior Managerial career with a 2-0 away win at Woodford Town. Craig Hall and Terry Amoafu scored the goals that earned the Motormen their first win of the season. Woodford Town meanwhile remain pointless at the foot of the table.

Cockfosters remain top of the table after a 2-0 away win at Sporting Bengal United. Carl Mullings got straight down to business, scoring the opener after only two minutes. He added a second in the 21st minute that sees Fosters top on goal difference over Hashtag United. Hashtag United are 2nd after picking up all the points at Sawbridgeworth Town. The Robins couldn’t buy a win last season, but they are a different propostion this term and took the lead in the 6th minute when Horace Orsmby lofted a shot over the keeper. The Tags  went into a 2-1 lead after Joe Gregory levelled up, then Thomas Anderson headed home. However the hosts were back on terms when Conor Clarke fired home a penalty midway through the second half. The Tags though continued to put the home defence under pressure and re-took the lead when Gregory notched his second in the 73rd minute, with Harry Honesty then bursting his way into the box and ramming a shot beyond the keeper to seal the deal five minutes from time.  Stansted followed their midweek FA Cup heroics with a domineering 5-0 victory over Southend Manor that moves them up the 3rd. Greg Moore opened the account in only the 4th minute; Michael Salako added the second as the Airportmen went in at the break two goals to the good. Billy Coyne made it 3-0 on the hour, then Moore notched his second five minutes from time. Ryan Ramsey finished the show in the 87th minute, while at the other end it was another clean sheet for Jarvis Monk who has now collected four of them so far this season. Hadley end the day in 6th after a first half strike from Luke Alfano was enough to see off Takeley. In any case the Bricks are proving to be resolute at the back, with Luke Ward also picking up his fourth clean sheet this term.

Enfield parted with Matt Henning in midweek but the E’s again failed in their quest for long points after a goal fest at Hoddesdon Town. Craig Tolley placed the Lilywhites into a 10th minute lead, but Sammy Leonard-Mould levelled ten minutes later. Liam Mulligan restored Hoddesdon’s lead in the 35th minute, but ex Professional Jamie Cureton, who lists a host of clubs in his long career is now turning out for Enfield and he provided the equaliser five minutes before half time. But the hosts unloaded a heavy barrage in the second half as Mulligan bagged his second of the afternoon in the 63rd minute; followed soon afterwards with contributions from Blue Gallagher and Aiden Critchley. Alex Warman was able to cut the deficit with a goal for the E’s two minutes from time, but the 5-3 defeat sees them now down in 17th. St Margaretsbury and Clapton are both near the bottom end of the table and met at The Recreation Ground. Ridwan Hussein, Matthew Bentley and an own goal meant the Tons went in at the break leading 3-0. Kyle Roberts scored twice, one of them a penalty in the 78th minute; four minutes later Jake Hayden-Eley had equalised for Bury, which meant they turned a pointless game into something a little more profitable. The Tons on reflection probably see their point as two points dropped as they looked home and dry at one point. Saffron Walden Town don’t seem to have got totally up and running just yet, however they did manage to turn a losing position into a point earned at Cricklefield. The Bloods trailed to a 41st minute goal from Dimitri Christou, but Luke Wilson notched twelve minutes from time to secure an away point.
